A carrot, put simply, is a map or route out of a Hollow in Zenless Zone Zero. Almost every time you take on a Commission, you'll find yourself in a Hollow, which is where ethereals or enemies exist. In order to navigate that Hollow, and crucially escape, you'll need to follow a route to an exit. This is performed using a carrot.

In the game's lore, carrots are data collected by the Hollow Investigative Association and copied onto a chip. These are then installed into Bangboos to ensure those entering Hollows can escape safely. Think of carrots like Google Maps for Hollows.
